He is a grandfather of space flight.

He didn't go to school, due to deafness, and hence taught himself mathematics and physics, and thus developed love for the subjects.

He became a recluse, due to his deafness. Made a living by teaching mathematics in local school.

Loved to ride bicycle. Made experiments with various flying machines, e.g. dirigables, of which there are many models in his home in the town of Kaluga, Russia. I recommend to visit this museum.
