(read “Symposium ” )

Socrates teaches that love is an aspiration for that which is beautiful and good. The beautiful and the good lead to good deeds. Through grasping the beautiful and the good, one is happy. Love is an aspiration towards immortality, as love is responsible for creations, and through these creations we partake of immortality. There is immortality of bodily kind, and there is immortality of intellectual kind. For the first, we turn to women. For the second, we turn to arts. There is a certain path for development of love: first, there is love for one body. Then, there is love for plurality of bodies. Next, comes love for ethical, moral beauty. Then, there is love for knowledge. Then there is love for the beautiful and good itself.

The guy knew love!
