Spinoza made living by grinding lenses used in microscopes and telescopes. For his day, that was a very advanced technology, as both the microscope and the telescope were just recently invented.

Spinoza was an outcast, both from the Jewish community, and then from the Christian one. So, he was neither "Baruch Spinoza", nor "Benedict". He was a true iconoclast, a heretic.

Now, of course, the Jewish community and the Dutch both claim him as his own.
